MontsM 773: Montserrat, Biblioteca del Monestir MS 773. OVERVIEW Size: 565 x 390 now extant 131 parchment folios, no index, modern pencil foliation. Scribe: several Hands from the Alamire workshop. Place and Brief History: Brussels/Mechelen; possibly a gift from Emperor Maximilian I to his daughter Margaret of Austria before being inherited by her niece Mary of Hungary in 1530 and subsequently inherited by Philip II of Spain (great grandson of Maximilian) as indicated in the 1602 inventory of Philip's manuscripts; in 1620 was bought by the Real Convento de las Señoras de la Encarnaçion in Madrid and subsequently acquired by the Benedictine monastery at Montserrat during the 1920s. Date: 1508 to perhaps as late as 1534; possible completion no later than 1516. Covers and Decoration: Dark brown leather over wooden boards with lozenge design, brass corners and buckles; severely mutilated with most art work and boarders excised; only six painted initials remain: ff. 15r (C of Contra.), 46r (C of Contra and B of Bassus), 62r (most of C of Contra) and 86r (C of Contra and B of Bassus); most inked calligraphic initials remain other than on the 26 folios almost completely removed.
